From Kern de Gonzalez’s post, it seems like they were living in a trailer park. Sometimes all the property outside the trailer itself technically belongs to the park management and is treated like a shared public area. There’s all sorts of weird little jurisdictional technicalities that happen in trailer parks from what I’ve been told.
