The quotes from the owner sound rather Sovereign Citizen to me, it seems we have a bit of that particular flavor of nuts here, unfortunately.

It sounds like a nightmare for the new owners.

    Sounds similar to a US sovereign citizen. Person found “one weird trick” to not have to pay off their mortgage. Just declare your contract with the bank void, stop making payments, then be confused when the bank doesn’t respond to your weird demands/requests.

      Yeah, that’s exactly what it sounds like, similar language and all.

      I hope this doesn’t cause too many issues for the new owners.

        They were also unable to rent the property to service their mortgage, which placed them at risk of default.

        Hard to be sympathetic to either party.

          I’m no landlord fan either, but the whole system kinda falls over if owning a property doesn’t mean you actually own it, and the previous owner can just stay there indefinitely.
