This app is a small jewel:
- offline translation thanks to firefox translation engine
- OCR on images with tessercat
- overlay of translated text on the original image -> awesome!
It’s still a young app, but it’s really important to go towards de-googling!

Ooh, this is exciting!
Ive been using it since release, so for around 2 weeks now, and its pretty amazing. The OCR works well on paper stuff with clear contrast, but not so well on LCD screens. It supports non latin scripts and that also seemed to work well in my limited tests. The translation capabilities are just 1:1 the same as firefox’s translator model so it works pretty well but is far from perfect when it comes to slightly more complicated sentence structures.
The last two updates have added much needed UX features and it looks like the dev is very willing to build this into something truly great. One thing that isnt working yet is to export/share the overlayed image which would be cool.
Yes! Agreed!!!
I want this!
Wow, that’s amazing!
Edit: Just tried it. It works and doesn’t take up much space.
Thanks and this is awesome.
The developer has a blog and this post describes how he implemented OCR and translated text overlay. It’s a fascinating and interesting read!
just tried this today, with most of the other foss translators on fDroid. Uninstalled it after it translated one of my test phrases with the exact opposite.
Don’t trust it, if you’re trying to communicate with somebody who doesn’t speak a language you can understand.
Whats your test phrase? That seems interesting
it would be translated to English as “i don’t wish you a happy birthday” but “happy birthday” is so common, it is quickly enveloped in “happy birthday”, “joyeux anniversaire”.
plus some other simple plays on common sayings.
I think that goes for any translator
