FancyPantsFIRE@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•CDC to hire former head of anti-vaccine group founded by RFK Jr.English22·3 days agoThe shitty part is even if people still pursue vaccines despite new obstacles, we’re definitely losing herd immunity. Seems like these measles outbreaks are just a taste of things to come. What a timeline.

FancyPantsFIRE@lemmy.worldto Voyager@lemmy.world•Experimental Piefed support is now available for VoyagerEnglish2·3 days agoI’ve noticed link images are very pixelated when browsing piefed (piefed.social specifically) but then same links look fine when browsing lemmy. I’m guessing this is a piefed side problem (or maybe an instance configuration choice?).
Yes, assuming the Rh factor aligns, but the inverse is not true.
FancyPantsFIRE@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•LLMs factor in unrelated information when recommending medical treatmentsEnglish181·5 days agoTheir analysis also revealed that these nonclinical variations in text, which mimic how people really communicate, are more likely to change a model’s treatment recommendations for female patients, resulting in a higher percentage of women who were erroneously advised not to seek medical care, according to human doctors.
This is not an argument for LLMs (which people are deferring to an alarming rate) but I’d call out that this seems to be a bias in humans giving medical care as well.
It was only around for 4 years, and they peaked at 250k subscribers (against 19m segas sold in the US) so it remained pretty niche. I’ve similarly never met anyone else who had it and remembers it outside of my family.
If anyone wants to see what the experience was like you can see a video of an offline revival effort by BillyTime! Games.

FancyPantsFIRE@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Rich people know their cosmetic surgery is obvious and uncanny, but that's the point; it's a way of signalling that you belong in a certain income bracket and that you're part of the 1%English10·8 days agoAgreed. I’m not advocating for it, but subtle surgery with a reasonably skilled practitioner often flies under the radar if you didn’t know the person. The most common things like nose jobs and face lifts are almost routine at this point.
It’s not for me, but there is a confirmation bias around plastic surgery where bad results are highly visible and good results are almost invisible.
Cursor (which everyone at my job is now “heavily encouraged “ to use) spat code at me today that attempted to hardcode credentials. Good luck guys!
