I’m probably buying her a Cattleya next week, too, as a late mothers’ day gift. (I never gift people in those “commercially special” occasions, I’d rather wait a bit and give them fancier gifts. Or look for stuff that they’ll genuinely enjoy. Birthday gifts are a must though.)

I also like being here. I feel like this sort of comm is what the Fediverse needs the most - politics is important and all, but sometimes you just want to chill and talk random stuff.

Birds: rufous horneros, rufous thrushes, kiskadees. Including a kiskadee fight, it was fucking hilarious - picture two males encircling each other, as if they were in a ring, surrounded by females. (Picture a 40yo surrounded by two cats, watching them fight through the window. It was like this.) Once in a blue moon I see a hummingbird, they used to visit me more often before the hail killed my fuchsia.

Cool arthropods: a silver argiope once, I “adopted” her but she had children and passed away, RIP Kumoko. My basil is always gathering some native bees. I guess for most people gaucho spiders count?

Mammals: only the usual. Cat, dog, cat, human, cat… …my neighbourhood has a lot of cats, including uninvited guests.

I can’t recall the last time I saw a toad. When I was a kid I had fun splashing them with water - it’s harmless to the critter, but if you startle them they jump.

For reference, this is in urban South America, Cfb climate.

Don’t tell my folks but I’m going to use them as guinea pigs for yet another Roman recipe. This time it’s minutal matianum - pork with apples. (To be fair I always adapt this stuff to take into account their personal tastes.)

I’ll be also probably spend a fair time taking care of my beavers in Timberborn. Got addicted to that silly game.

Disclaimers: I’m aware that I might have an incomplete picture of the situation. As such take what I say with a grain of salt, and do call me out if I say something that is bullshit. Also, I’d rather not take intentions into account.

With that out of the way: Kiwi Farms is a cesspool, and I think that Leni should take this whole situation as a wake up call.

That site doesn’t just “happen” to contain harassment; it exists for harassment, even if Leni claims otherwise. It is not for “an angle of freedom of speech”. And even if she’s just there for some popcorn, or to discuss random stuff, clowns only perform where there’s an audience clapping and laughing at their stunts. I don’t know if she actively harassed someone, but she’s still condoning it. It’s still bad.

And, like, I know popcorn is fun, but this sort of site is better treated as “don’t touch it”. GIF related:

And linking the Fediverse in KF is even worse. The Fediverse hosts lots of disempowered people, often from marginalised groups. Linking it there is the same as saying “hey guys! Here’s a barn full of lolcows!”. Don’t - those people have enough shit to deal with, you’re only making it worse for them.

So, while I personally don’t hold any strong opinion for/against Leni, I do think those instance admins did the right thing - they’re protecting their users.

The fact that they’re suing “the Fediverse” as if it was a monolithic entity is real funny.
