I think this particular shot is a bit of a non-story, honestly. From what I read in the guardians article, they composited in a falling building. The footage of the building collapsing was itself generated by ai (I’m guessing veo3).
The generation of these kind of short, repetitive assets via ai is probably the ideal use case, aside from compositing.
It’s low cost, low on energy resources, and frees up the VFX team to work in other areas.
I get that the stupid end goal is to replace actors, cameras, sets, and the like, consolidating all of the creative output into one industrialized pipeline, but that’s capitalism at work, not technology. The movie industry has been eating artist alive for decades. A creative team using tools at their disposal in a reasonable, grounded way are not the enemy. Subscription services might be.
I’m doing okay! I’m definitely feeling emotionally burnt out this evening, but I couldn’t tell you exactly why. 🙃 However, I ate some ice cream, and I’m going to read fanfiction.

I had one like this for years. When you dispose of the old plugs, try and keep the plastic parts. You can cut them some to get the roots out, but at least the top half. You can buy rock wool and other substrates to grow your own seeds, and the plastic part can be handy to keep the new substrate in place.

It is my understanding that the advances in classifier models were and are inexorably linked to generative models. Wasn’t Deepdream a fairly crude inversion of existing classifier models?
I’m sorry, but didn’t Google pioneer the image recognition models years ago that Inaturalist uses to help users identify plants and animals? Google can suck it, but perhaps ai has proven it has a place in these applications?
I feel very lucky to work 4 10 hour days rather than 5 8s. Though, it does often feel like a waste of time when we all spend the last hour and a half taking.
