Training AI models is completely different, though. That requires massive amounts of compute and data and electricity and water, and that’s all very easy for the government to track.

The framing looks bad to us because that’s not the housing we want, that’s not the vacation we want, those aren’t the toys we want, and that’s not the retirement we want.

There are loads and loads of people who love suburbs and Funko trash, and they will fight us to the death to preserve what they have.

The examples given are, in fact, what they’re fighting for and they’re fully aware and quite happy about it.

It’s more meaningful to focus on things which are objectively bad, like rising suicide rates or lowering life expectancies.

That’s the history of memes.

So at first, people were making fun of a bad artist with a bad comic. In that context it wasn’t edgelord material, he was an adult and he can handle being the butt of a joke.

Then, the meme gained a life of its own (its context was itself) and that old context ceased to matter. It wasn’t about the artist anymore, but without context it still wasn’t edgelord material.

At no point was the joke edgy because the joke was never about miscarriage.

The article is about LLMs specifically? And it’s arguing that intelligence can’t exist without subjectivity, the qualia of experiential data. These LLM text generators are being assigned intelligence they do not have because we have a tendency to assume there is a mind behind the text.

This is not about AI being conceptually impossible they’re “made of math”. I’m not even sure where you got that? Where did that quote come from? It’s not in the link, or the Atlantic article.

Okay, but LLMs don’t have thoughts that can be terminated, so that’s just another way they aren’t intelligent. Saying “clearly” for them would just be a way to continue the pattern, they wouldn’t use it the way I did to express how self evident and insultingly obvious it is.

AI isn’t impossible, but LLMs are not intelligent and you need to stop dehumanizing yourself to argue for their intelligence.
