witten@lemmy.worldtoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•How long will people be in denial that america is now a fascist regime? You all really going to wait until trumps third term until you come to terms with it, arent you?11·3 days agoTHIS. Everyone who’s feeling hopeless needs to get out of the Lemmy echo chamber and find people building the resistance in the real world. It’s actually not hard to do. Go to a protest and talk to people. Look online for a local resistance organization and show up at a meeting. Spend your money at companies that don’t support fascists. Whatever you do, just don’t give up because that’s exactly what the fascists want.

I take it you weren’t at these protests. At the one in my city, the end of the protest march had tables and tables full of resistance organizations signing people up to get involved, handing out fliers on ways to do more than wave cardboard signs, etc.
In many ways, protests like these are onboarding for the resistance.

Spoiler: It’s not to convince Trump of anything.

You’re right. It will. In concert with all the other things people are actually doing to fight back.
No.
I won’t be sealioned.

witten@lemmy.worldOPto Seattle@lemmy.world•No Kings Mass Protest SATURDAY (June 14th)English8·9 days agoWhile peaceful protests are awesome, and this march/rally is indeed intended to be a peaceful protest, “Riots are the language of the unheard” --MLK Jr. So personally I try not to police how people want to express themselves. I see riots as a kind of inevitable reaction… You press your boot hard enough onto the neck of a populace, and violence will be the result.
Additionally, “violence” is super subjective and often reported inaccurately in the media. Is resisting arrest violence? Helping someone else resist arrest? Is returning a smoke grenade to its owner? How about zip-tying Lime bikes together? Blocking the path of a vehicle holding immigrants?
My point is just that it’s not all black and white. (And to be clear, I don’t expect any of this stuff at the Saturday protest.)

I don’t think I’ll convince you of anything here, but all I’ll say is that it takes multiple types of resistance acts to make an effective resistance movement. One type of act is the “real threat” you’re talking about, but another is peaceful protests. They’re all tools in a toolbox, and used in concert they can cause real and lasting positive impact.
