After using VLC for over 15 years, I decided to explore a little more. I had no clue that it comes with thousands of internet radio stations on Icecast, as well as the ability to add all your podcasts into it (just need to find the link to your podcasts hosting service). I no longer use any streaming services (to me, they are criminal, plus they’re full of ads and generally getting worse and more expensive every day)
Just wanted to let anyone know who may not know how much VLC can do!
Another thing VLC can do that some might not be aware of is downloading streaming media to file for storage. If you can find the right stream URL, VLC can save whatever that is to MP4 or your format of choice. Save your favorite shows / streams / podcasts to disk and keep them safe in your own personal media server!
I forgot to mention that! Super awesome feature akin to the days of hitting record on the cassette while waiting by the radio
It’s probably just user error (aka me) but I have had difficulty with this sometimes, mainly with streaming YouTube videos. Anyone have a handy tutorial on how to do this so I can troubleshoot where I’m getting it wrong?
You can VLC for so many things that it’s overwhelming. I streamed my desktop to another machine on the network running obs.
mpv is worth a shout out as well
VLC is such an incredible tool, I use it just about everyday to do everything from just watching a video to recording streams . Don’t forget to donate in some way to your favorite apps. I know the VLC group could use some help to keep them going.
