I’ll be sticking with hand pumps I think: There’s no battery to fail and the travel ones are pretty light.
I recommend the Topeak Morph series for use on the road and I use a Joe Blow at home that also works very well (I’ve even used it to inflate car tires before).
Can someone please come out with one that uses a replaceable battery (18650 or 21700)? You can still recharge them in-device, but you wouldn’t be forced to buy into planned obsolescence.
Now that I would actually consider getting! My bike already uses a 21700 light and I use 18650s in most of my flashlights.
Being able to swap out a dead battery and carry spares would eliminate my primary concern about battery powered pumps.
Yup. I tend to prefer that my flashlights and bike lights also use those batteries, and there’s no reason why these small pumps can’t (at least not the TINY mini pumps).
I don’t understand this. Manual pumps are refined, reliable, light, and cheap. This is the equivalent of circling the gym parking lot looking for a close spot so you don’t have to walk before your workout.
Big high psi tires are a lot to pump up sometimes, but cartridges seem to be the preferred method there.
Hand pumps are worse because?
Using a full sized pump on my tires takes a while to fill. If I tried to use a mini-pump, it would take ridiculously long. If I’m just casually riding and have time to spare, no problem. If I’m commuting to work, I could see the benefit of the time savings.
Would you still carry a pump or C02?
I don’t carry a pump or CO2 on this bike. Never tried CO2. Not sure how many cartridges I’d even need. But a mini electric bike pump would be a lot smaller and don’t look like they’d much more expensive than cartridges.
What wheels btw?
The tires are HEB Allscape 26" x 4" I think? Wheel is still whatever the oem wheels are. Swapped to them pretty recently. Didn’t get any flats with the OEM tires either. Probably about 2400 miles and one broken arm on this particular bike so far. Definitely keep a pump on my roadbike and hybrid.
Oh wow, yeah that sounds like a lot of air. I have 20"x4" as my fattest tire but it only runs at 15 psi (it also broke my arm lol, but that was a faulty front fender courtesy of the ENGWE corporation).
They take effort I guess?
I still use hand pumps though lol
Same here, Topeak Morph has become my go-to for a travel pump.
Everyone’s rushing in rebranding / customizing these pumps. There’s some pretty good models for what they actually cost on AliExpress. I recently set out to find the exact model SILCA rebadged and I found it, but then I found another that looked better and ordered that. It’s been pretty good so far. Looks very well made.
So counter-intuitive that such a tiny motor and battery could produce the virtual elbow grease needed for 90 psi.
