This sounds like a marketing attempt to align us modern Luddites with an already established “out group” to build a public perception against abstaining from planet killing slop generators.

Corporate news and media, especially in cases like this, has always been a tool to turn the uninformed public against educated dissenters. They targeted hippies in the 70s for speaking out about the military and prison industrial complexes and this is more of the same. It’s a cheap attack that always works.

I can’t speak for the true motivations of the author of the article. But a lot of what this might accomplish is a lot of in-group fighting. You can already find insults towards vegans in this comment section alone and even more in the original post. And we’re on lemmy, imagine how it will go on reddit or other platforms.

I’ve seen this happen many times. That attempt of binding outgroups backfires to the extent that has people believing it’s engineered by infiltration. I think it’s the shortsighted nature of people that generates this in the end regardless of its initial catalyst point of injection.

The sad and terrifying part is that this always works. Look how many comments this thread already has here on Lemmy. Even when we know it all too well, we can’t help but to chime in. Even the ones who are trying to “put out the fire”, get caught by the same net. Myself included.
