I found the concept hard to get a grip on
philthi@lemmy.worldto Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Ramsay's kitchen nightmares, but for software development167·7 days agoI would watch this. Especially if it was an angry Brit, rather than a dramatic American. And even more if it didn’t keep replaying the same 5 minutes of telly before and after each ad break. And even more if it didn’t have an ad break every 10 minutes that lasted 5 minutes.
philthi@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If someone where to use the term "Adult Playground", what would you think it describes?16·8 days agoI literally said this today, to my wife and I meant “an area exactly like a children’s playground, but suitably large enough for adults to use”.

There are a good few Isaac Asimov books like this.
philthi@lemmy.worldto Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading or listening? June 102·10 days agoLearning a new language, I can speak and understand pretty well now, but reading is a great way to expand vocabulary I think.
philthi@lemmy.worldto Books@lemmy.world•What book(s) are you currently reading or listening? June 107·11 days agoI’m rereading the entire discworld series but in a new language and I’m just loving it. I’m just about to finish equal rites, and I’d honestly forgotten what a joy these books are. I miss Terry Pratchett and his profoundly positive impact on me.
I was just explaining a misunderstanding, that being heckler vs hawker… I think you’ve replied to the wrong comment?
I think they’re referring to hawkers, or people on the streets harassing you to buy something. I don’t know why everyone here is calling them hecklers and not confused by that.
philthi@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"This is so dangerous!", laments the woman driving directly into a Critical Mass bike rideEnglish1·14 days agoI said it elsewhere but it’s worth repeating here that fighting drivers is fighting the wrong fight. Fight the government.
Even if you convince the drivers that you’re right, nothing changes.
philthi@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"This is so dangerous!", laments the woman driving directly into a Critical Mass bike rideEnglish11·14 days agoI agree that more bike lanes are needed and also cyclists need to be treated with the respect any life demands.
But flipping off a driver or generally blaming people who drive is fighting the wrong fight. I drive a car, I also cycle, being in a car doesn’t make me anti-bike.
Fight the government - flip off the government - that is refusing to put in safe infrastructure for the bikes (with protests like this, of course. But don’t flip off the driver, at best it does nothing, at worst it widens the gap between both groups and makes it easier to dehumanize and villianize the cyclists).
Yeah, I travelled solo a few times to see if it was for me, and generally it left me feeling very lonely and disconnected from everyone around me, and uncomfortable going anywhere like a restaurant or a bar.
