Admiral Patrick

I’m surprisingly level-headed for being a walking knot of anxiety.

Ask me anything.

Special skills include: Knowing all the “na na na nah nah nah na” parts of the Three’s Company theme.

I also develop Tesseract UI for Lemmy/Sublinks

  • Nothing, really, though it took a good bit of detox to get to that point. I’m only using a pseudo dumb phone, though (it runs Android 11 in a flip phone form factor).

Last August, I did a 30 day challenge and used it like a true dumb phone. No email, no chat, just the same things a comparable KaiOS true dumb phone would do. That was…limiting but I quickly got used to it. After that, I decided to un-dumb it a bit and am still daily-driving it almost a year later.

The only apps it runs now:

    • Thunderbird Mobile for email
    • Aegis for TOTP
    • Bank app (a necessary evil since I bank remotely and nearest branch is 50 miles away)
    • Organic Maps
    • SchildiChat (Matrix group chat)
    • Meshtastic
    • Fennec (though mostly only for looking up business phone numbers/addresses while I’m out)

So it’s not a true dumb phone now, but it’s pretty bare bones. I think even true dumb phones have mobile browsers (KaiOS is basically Firefox OS, afterall) as well as some kind of mapping, email, and even TOTP apps. All the rest of the “smart” stuff it does is just annoying enough that I don’t spend all day on it, but works well when I need it.

I don’t know if I could go to a Light Phone III since I need my bank app, but something like the Minimal Phone with its eink display and QWERTY keyboard is probably my upgrade path.

  • Often, they just spin up a disposable account, post, and delete the whole account w/content after they’re done. It’s annoying AF and incredibly selfish. For a while, it was the same person doing it, though not sure if that’s still the case.

Regardless, those people have ruined things for everyone (especially legit new users) and I will not engage with accounts newer than 30 days. Lemm.ee evacuation notwithstanding, I kinda wish other people took a similar stance and maybe these people will knock that off.

  • For sure!

I can’t stand when people throw that argument around. There’s a huge difference between ignoring reality (aka ‘sticking your head in the sand’) and not wanting to be flooded with endless coverage of the same topic/assholes; especially if it’s causing unwanted stress.

Like, I am an adult with object permanence; I know things continue to exist and happen even if I need to look away for a while lol.

AFAIK, it’s mostly due to how the driving exams are structured.

First you have to pass the written exam. If you fail that, you don’t continue.

After the written exam is the parallel parking test. That’s done on-site. If you don’t pass that part, you don’t continue to the road test.

The road test is last; it’s up to the instructor where you go for that, but it usually is a route that covers various scenarios that were on the exam (4-way stops, crosswalks, speed transition zones, school zones, etc).

I’d guess it’s setup that way because of how many people fail the parallel parking test; best to do that in a controlled environment where there’s no risk to regular people’s cars out in the wild.

Edit: This probably varies state-by-state, too. I’m just describing how it was here.

  • No clue. I’ve tried to remain largely detached and treat it like watching a train wreck.

Unfortunately, I live right smack dab in the middle of all this, so I need some of it in my feed to remain informed. So I just filter it out by default and catch up on the broad strokes later. No longer having my front page be a deluge of coverage of two raging assholes seems to be helping my mental health lol.

Hey, we use grams and kilos for…other things too.

It is funny how we’re schizophrenic about it, though. Things will go from grams to ounces and then to kilos…or, so I’ve heard.

Edit: American cars are also kind of schizo like that, or at least they used to be. The engine and everything attached to it was metric and everything else was SAE. Fun times.

My parents insisted I learn on a manual, and while I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I do now.

The regional DMV office where I took my driving exam had the most notorious parallel parking setup in the state. It was two traffic cones next to a very large, 3 1/2 foot diameter log (representing the curb) and was on the side of a circular cul-de-sac. So not only did you have to account for the curvature, if you got too close to the “curb”, you were gonna have a very bad day lol.

If you’re wondering: I nailed it (they let you practice after hours which helped).
