  • my favourite was the 3D “file system” in Jurassic Park. At the time I was just using DOS and had no clue about Unix and was like “oh that’s bullshit” but it wasn’t. the thing actually exists and I have it on one of my machines right now that I like to use every now and again and in my head I always think “it’s a unix system, I know this.”

  • that’s the problem but the blame can also be squarely placed on us Millennials. Like you said when we were younger and older people had tech issues they’d hand it to us assuming we “get it” but we didn’t. we had to learn it by teaching ourselves. We taught ourselves how to write html, css, etc via Geocities and Myspace. We taught ourselves how to build computers or learned via tv shows like The Screensavers or Call for Help or just by reading PC magazines. AND THEN we decided since we taught ourselves all these solutions and what have you that we’d make it easier for future generations. We developed apps and tools that “just work” no tinkering needed, no customization needed, those are predefined settings. And we’re not teaching kids, we’re providing them with OUR solutions. Like you said we assume they “just get it” because we had to just get it. We didn’t have a choice. If we wanted a custom internet or tech experience we had to do it ourselves.

Today those options are provided because we provided it for them. They don’t need to be as tech literate as we had to be because we made things easier for them.

  • MaoMao is a weird one. Think of every WM available for Wayland. literally all of them. Ok so you’ve thought of them all? thought of the best parts? cool that’s MaoMao. It has, quite literally, EVERYTHING.

it has the tag system of River, it has the styling and animations of Hyprland, it has the tiling and smart gaps/smart features, scrathpad of sway, it has a scroller like Niri that can be turned on or off, it has a vim navigation style to the point you can navigate all your windows/tags using vim like nav. you can alt+tab to grid view everything…it’s just…it’s a lot not going to lie. the config CAN be massive. it has SO much as far as keybinds go you’ll not only be using mod/super but also alt on it’s own or ctrl on it’s own. think of it like 3 mod/supers.

So it does all that but the scary thing is, it’s stable. very stable. more than hyprland (which I don’t know if that’s saying much)

it’s a very, very, very good WM that with a bit more love and care I can see it surpassing hypland in popularity. It’s just VERY overwhelming and there’s a lot to it. But if you really get into it and make it your own you’ll have zero reason to ever switch WMs again because in all honesty…you’re quite literally using them all at the same time with maomao.
