I don’t understand this thinking for not legalising it. It could raise a lot of taxes desperately needed and at the same time save money for the police. It’s already used medicinally so it’s clear they see a benefit to it.

It would cost them votes with a certain group of voters who would make this a capital offence if they could.

It doesn’t really impact MPs, see the studies into drug use at the HoP or even this articles headline, so why bother risking losing important votes in swing seats? If the police started throwing MPs in jail for drug use then you’d see something done quite quickly.

Much like a lot of these wedge issues such as abortion there are a few nutters in the HoP who are rabidly opposed to it on moral grounds and a few whose husbands own legal medical cannabis farms who frankly don’t want the competition.

      save money for the police

No! It doesn’t work that way. Like at all. Legalizing will make police tremendously poorer. Found a joint? Got a few pounds in the pocket. The owner is released. Until next time. Next joint. And next banknote. Infinite money! Where the fuck would police get money if weed and prostitution would be legalized?

Why are Labour so desperate to placate the boomers who fled to Reform? The Tories lost way more of them anyway, and they’re not coming back as long as Nige has a gravy train to ride. How about using the parliamentary majority, no matter how frail, to begin fixing the country?

      to begin fixing the country?

The country only appears in need of fixing from the perspective of those without money or power. That is, you and me. From the perspective of the people running the country, who have both money and power, the country is working fine and there’s nothing that needs fixing.

Everybody in my town seems to think it’s legal ever since most of the US legalised it. The smell of weed is everywhere and I’ve seen numerous people casually smoke it in the street. The police don’t seem to care, so they may as well just make it official and start reaping the tax benefits.

Edit: Just to be clear, I am in the UK.

Yea I’m in the UK and smell it all the time too. It’s kind of the worst situation for it really at the moment. Cops don’t seem to care about possession so it’s use is widespread and those who do use it aren’t bothered about changing the status quo. But the criminal gangs who cultivate it and often exploit vulnerable people to do so have a large market and don’t have to pay taxes.

Careful there buddy. The US hasn’t legalized it, only certain states have. That means you can’t travel around with it in the US even if you bought it legally.

      Canada legalized it though.

Ah yes I forgot about Canada. I tried to be unambiguous but I am in the UK, and I just meant that the people in my town seem to believe that since the laws have largely changed over there then that somehow also applies to us. Everybody’s so blasé about using it and the cops don’t care so we should just tax the stuff already.

You realise it’s legal to use cannabis in the UK with a prescription? Cannabis was rescheduled in 2018.
